“With good basics, you’ll have endless options.”

I read this meme a few days ago which said, “I have CLOTHES but I don’t have OUTFITS, feel me?” YEAH. I DO! It is so annoying when you can’t afford all those cute clothes you have pinned in your pinterest for “inspiration”. Maybe you can’t afford them but that doesn’t mean you can’t make do of what you can! It took me a while to crack the shopping code without burning a huge hole in my pocket. So what I learnt?! This is it.
- Basics for the win: Invest in good, durable basics; a good pair of denim, black and white solid t-shirts, camis, tank tops etc. Because these basics are going to get you through all those days when you scream at your overflowing cupboard saying “I don’t have anything to wear” which is pretty much every day, am I right?
- Make a statement: Shop for statement pieces, pieces that are rare, different and true to whom you are. Jackets, palazzos, dupattas, scarves etc. these come handy when you are styling your basics.
- Accessorize: Don’t underestimate the power of accessories. You can change your entire look by just replacing one accessory with another. It is not only about your earrings or necklace, it’s the complete package; your hair, your makeup, your handbag, your shoes. All these in unison make a lit fit.
In the following pictures I’ve styled a basic black polo neck tee in 3 different ways:
- A casual day out look
- A work day look
- A night out look

“I paired the tee with a simple denim skirt, (you can always switch the skirt for a pair of pants/shorts). Accessorised it with a wide belt, knee high boots (not a high heel person? Pair it with your favourite sneakers, works the same)black sunglasses and a classic pair of hoops.”

“In this one I layered the top with a nice pair of printed palazzos, and a long printed jacket (don’t fancy a jacket? Try it with a blazer, looks just as chic). Tied it together with the same belt as the palazzo. The print on print in itself is a statement so I accessorised it with a pair of oxidised jhumkas, a small satchel and I was good to go!”

“This last one was a re-imagined ‘little black dress’, paired the polo with a simple black skirt, and a rich velvet bralette on top. Accessorised it with a pair of fishnet stockings, black boots, a black metallic clutch and statement pearl drop earrings. (which btw, I bought at colaba causeway for a steal!)”
All these will work just as well with a kurti or a shirt or a top of any other solid colour, that’s the beauty of basics!
